BDS Prize
The BDS Prize is a technical paper competition for younger engineers. All submitted papers are reviewed and the best three or four are selected for presentation at the Institution of Civil Engineers. The finalists present their work and then answer questions from the audience. The competition is held every two years, and is open to members of the British Dam Society under the age of 35. The deadline for submitting synopses for this years competition is the 31st August 2011, with papers being presented at the BDS evening meeting on the 21st November 2011. There is a cash prize of £800 for first place, with second and third place prized of £400 and £200 respectively.

The BDS Photography Competition is open to members of the BDS and ICE as well as Engineering students. Submitted photos are judged by a panel of judges and cash prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Submission topics vary from year to year. Entrants retain copyright for their photos, but copies may be printed in Dams & Reservoirs and used on the BDS website.
Please note, the photography competition has been suspended for 2011, as the BDS Prize competition is also running.
Please can we urge you to keep up the good work in photographing interesting and beautiful settings. The photo competition will return in 2012.

BDS sponsor students from universities in full-time education and YINI students to attend dams-related courses/seminars. In the past, this has included the BDS Conference, the Barcelona ICOLD Conference and the 10-day training course at Ridracoli, Italy entitled "When man meets nature".
The 2011 competition is now open - First prize will be an expenses paid trip to the 2012 BDS conference in Leeds, from the 12th to 15th September 2012. Second and third prized will be £200 and £100 respectively.
To enter the 2011 BDS Student Competition, students should send the following to Tim Fuller, the Secretary of BDS, by email (Tim.Fuller@ice.org.uk) by 30th November 2011.
- An essay up to 1000 words on the topic “The Benefits of Dams”.

A one-page application outlining what you would gain from the experience of attending the BDS 2012 Conference, why you wish to take part and why you should be selected.
